Web Designer and SEO: Should the Same Person Do Both?

Web designer and SEO: web designer working on a website across two monitors

For most small businesses, yes: hiring a web designer and SEO in one person is the simplest way to get a website that looks good and actually gets found. Design decisions (page structure, headings, speed, how content is laid out) are SEO decisions, so splitting them between two people who never talk is where a lot of websites go wrong.

That said, there are times when a separate SEO specialist makes sense. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Why do web design and SEO overlap so much?

Web design and SEO overlap because the things Google uses to understand a page are built during the design: the URL structure, headings, page speed, mobile layout, image alt text and internal links. By the time a site launches, much of its SEO potential is already set.

Google’s own SEO starter guide recommends descriptive URLs with words useful to users, and descriptive alt text that explains how an image relates to the content. Both are decided while the site is being built, usually by the designer.

What does a web designer who does SEO actually handle?

A web designer who does SEO handles the technical and on-page foundations: site structure, one page per service, titles and meta descriptions, headings, image optimisation, page speed, schema markup and keyword research for each page. The site launches ready to rank, instead of needing fixing afterwards.

What that looks like in practice:

  • Keyword research before design, so each page has a job to do.
  • A structure built around services, not around what looks tidy in a menu.
  • Headings that match searches, written into the design, not bolted on later.
  • Fast, lightweight pages that work well on mobile.
  • Structured data so Google understands your business, articles and FAQs.
  • Analytics and Search Console set up from launch day.

When do you need a separate SEO specialist?

You need a separate SEO specialist when you’re competing nationally, running a large e-commerce store, recovering from a penalty, or need ongoing link building and digital PR. Those are specialist, ongoing jobs that go well beyond building a solid site.

For most local businesses (trades, clinics, professional firms, restaurants) a site built with SEO in mind, plus a well-managed Google Business Profile, covers most of what they need. Additional SEO support can come later, once the foundations are right.

Web designer vs SEO specialist vs both: which is right for you?

The right choice depends on what you need most: a new website, ongoing growth in a competitive market, or both. The table below shows how the three set-ups compare.

Set-up What you get Best for Watch out for
Web designer only (no SEO) A good-looking site Businesses that don’t rely on Google for customers Beautiful sites nobody finds
Web designer who does SEO A site built to rank from launch, plus on-page and local SEO Most small and local businesses Check they do keyword research, not just “SEO-friendly” plugins
Web designer + separate SEO specialist Build plus ongoing specialist SEO work Competitive national or e-commerce markets Two suppliers who need to coordinate

Does a web designer need to understand marketing?

Yes. A web designer who understands marketing builds pages around what makes customers act: a clear offer, proof, and an obvious next step. A website that ranks but doesn’t convert just brings you visitors who leave.

The best combination is design, SEO and marketing thinking in the same plan. That’s how a site gets found, builds trust and turns visits into enquiries.

What should you ask a web designer about SEO?

Ask them what they do for SEO before, during and after the build, and ask to see sites they’ve built that rank. Vague answers like “all our sites are SEO-friendly” usually mean a plugin has been installed and nothing more.

Good questions to ask:

  1. Do you do keyword research before designing the pages?
  2. How will you structure my services into pages?
  3. Will you set up titles, meta descriptions and schema?
  4. How fast will the site be on mobile?
  5. If you’re replacing my old site, how will you handle redirects?
  6. What happens after launch?

Google’s own guide on hiring an SEO adds a useful rule: nobody can guarantee a number one ranking, so be wary of anyone who does.

Is it cheaper to hire one person for web design and SEO?

Usually, yes. One person doing both avoids paying twice for work that overlaps, such as page structure, content and technical setup, and avoids the cost of fixing SEO problems built into a site by someone who didn’t consider it.

What else do people ask about web designers and SEO?

Can I add SEO after my website is built? Yes, but it often means reworking pages, headings and structure, which costs more than building it in from the start.

Is an “SEO-friendly theme” enough? No. A theme can be fast and clean, but it can’t choose your keywords or write pages that answer what customers search.

Will a new website automatically rank? No new site ranks automatically. Building it right gives it the best start; content, reviews and links build on that over time.
