Local SEO Business Guide: What Is Local SEO and Do You Need It?

Local SEO is the work that gets a business found when people search for what it offers in a specific area, like “electrician Clapham” or “accountant near me“. For any local SEO business strategy, the goal is simple: appear in the Google map results and the top local listings at the moment someone is ready to call.

If your customers are mostly within driving distance of you, local SEO is usually the fastest and cheapest way to get more of them from Google.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the process of improving your visibility in location-based searches on Google Search and Google Maps. It combines your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website’s local pages and mentions of your business on other sites.

When someone searches for a service with local intent, Google usually shows a map with three businesses underneath it, often called the local 3 pack. Getting into those three spots is the main aim, because that’s where most local searchers look first.

How does Google decide which local businesses to show?

Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. In its guide to improving your local ranking, Google explains that prominence includes how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

In plain terms:

  • Relevance: does your profile and website clearly match what was searched?
  • Distance: how close are you to the searcher, or to the area they named?
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted is your business, online and off?

You can’t change distance. You can change almost everything about relevance and prominence, and that’s what local SEO works on.

What is the difference between local SEO and SEO?

Local SEO targets searches tied to a place and focuses on the map pack, while general SEO targets wider searches with no location, often across the whole country. The two overlap, but they use different signals and suit different businesses.

Local SEO General SEO
Example search “plumber in Balham” “how to fix a leaking tap”
Where you appear Google Maps and the local 3 pack, plus normal results Normal search results
Main signals Google Business Profile, reviews, distance, local links Content quality, backlinks, technical SEO
Best for Trades, clinics, salons, restaurants, local services Online shops, national services, publishers
Typical speed Often faster in a small area Usually slower, more competitive

Why is local SEO important for a small business?

Local SEO matters because people searching locally are usually ready to buy, book or call soon. Showing up in the map pack puts your phone number, reviews and directions in front of them at exactly that moment.

For a small business, it also levels the playing field. A well-optimised local business can outrank a big national brand in its own area, because distance and local relevance count in its favour.

How can you improve local SEO?

The quickest way to improve local SEO is to complete and verify your Google Business Profile, then build a steady flow of genuine reviews. After that, make sure your website has clear service and location pages that match what people search.

A practical order to work through:

  1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Google says you need to verify your business to edit your info and interact with customers.
  2. Fill in every field. Google notes that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results.
  3. Ask every happy customer for a review. Google lets you share a link or QR code to make it easy.
  4. Keep your name, address and phone number identical on your website and every directory.
  5. Create a page for each main service, and mention the areas you cover naturally.
  6. Get mentioned locally: suppliers, local associations, sponsorships and local press.

What do local SEO services for a small business include?

Local SEO services for a small business typically include Business Profile optimisation, review strategy, local citations, location or service pages on your website, and monthly tracking of map rankings. Good providers explain exactly which of those you’re paying for.

Should you hire a local SEO consultant in London?

Hiring a local SEO consultant in London makes sense when your market is competitive and you don’t have time to do the ongoing work yourself. London searches are crowded, so a complete profile often isn’t enough on its own.

Whoever you hire, Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO applies: ask for examples of previous work, and walk away from anyone who guarantees a number one ranking.

What else do people ask about local SEO?

A few quick answers to questions that come up often.

Do I need a physical shop for local SEO? No. Service-area businesses that visit customers can still have a Business Profile. Google says that if you don’t serve customers at your address, you should hide it and set service areas instead.

Can I add keywords to my business name on Google? No. Google’s guidelines say your name should reflect your real-world business name, and adding extra information can lead to suspension.

How long does local SEO take? It varies with competition. In a small area with a neglected profile, improvements can show quickly; in central London, expect a longer build.
